Does anyone else feel this whole Jo Calderone thing is her being flippant with queer and trans* identity (I originally used appropriating, but realized her actions were different that from what I read about them) so she can piggy back on her audience based on her “radical activism”? I’m not sure that’s what it is or her intent or whatever but. It feels it.

And I don’t like people using my gender or the queer community in general as their gimmick *glares hard*

If you have any thoughts on it either way, you’re welcome to clarify it for me. I’m trying to make sense of her actions. It just. Feels bleh ><

Mostly, it just made me dysphoric that she’d be read as male more often than I am if everyone didn’t already know her as Lady Gaga, but I know that’s my shit to deal with, so. I don’t know much about this character she created. If he’s meant to be trans, then she’s definitely exploiting and appropriating trans identities. If he’s meant to be a cis guy, then she’s just playing a role and there’s no objective way to criticize what she’s doing. WHICH doesn’t mean we can’t still feel weird about it given her past cissexism and lack of apology for it.

Either way, people calling her a trans ally for dressing up as a guy are clearly clueless.
